My “Honest Review” of the Cubase 13 Update is the most successful video on my channel so far. It’ll shorty reach 10k views and i want to thank you very much for watching!
The majority of comments show that this kind of honest/balanced content is very much needed on Music YouTube.
Although the video was not meant to be a rant, since i’m a happy Cubase User myself, and i’ve made some stupid mistakes that i want to address here…
Grouping Audio- and Midi-Tracks together
The “most underrated feature” in Cubase 13 was of course also possible to do in Cubase 12. I don’t know how it happened, but i confused this one and framed it as if it was a new thing in C13.
What i can say is that the routing function is now better visible in the inspector and the actual feature i got confused about is described on Steinberg’s “what’s new” page as:
You can now set instrument tracks/racks/sampler return channels as inputs for audio tracks, as well as FX and group channels.
Steinberg
So i got this wrong and need to make a follow-up vid about the feature, because it’s an interesting topic and cool production technique.
It’s about the Upgrade
A second thing i want to point out is the fact that i’m talking about the upgrade from Cubase 12 to Cubase 13 and if it’s worth upgrading.
I don’t question Cubase as a whole! I think i’ve made that clear in the video but wanted to underline it here again. Of course, Cubase is a DAW-Flagship, only Steinberg didn’t seem to be aware of that when they made version 13.
After a couple of months
Anyway, i started working with Cubase 13 immediately and the main “new” things i have used so far are the Black Valve Compressor, VoxComp (which works great with instruments, too) and Iconica Sketch (but i only needed the Cello so far).
My main concern sadly didn’t change. I still hate the “new modern look” (what a joke!). Not only that it looks cheap; i still have trouble navigating the inspector and always need to look twice to make sure i’m in the right line 🙂
I must also say that i still don’t find the new channel strip (that can be opened left side of the screen) helpful at all. In my Review i was neutral about it, but now i must say it’s more or less useless. Nice try 😉
The most annoying things are the graphical glitches, though.
It’s not that they break anything, but it’s no fun to see a software like Cubase acting like that.
Many of my commentators are worried about program crashes, but personally i can’t say that Cubase 13 crashes more often than C12. Both versions run pretty stable after all, but yes, they still crash sometimes.
I just see that there is a new Cubase Update out (13.0.21) that i’m going to install in a minute. Let’s hope for the best.
