I’ve made a DistroKid tutorial where i use my track “Thaw” to demonstrate the upload process on DistroKid. There are quite a few more steps to do than on other platforms and some steps are a bit confusing…
I also let you know what i think about that “Mastering Service” (Mixea), DistroKid is promoting heavily during the upload process.
Online Mastering Service
What i don’t mention in the video is, to be fair, that DistroKid may have a problem with too many amateurs uploading low-quality files that get rejected by the streaming services – which is bad for DK, since they have to explain it to their unhappy customers.
So, if you have no clue about mastering but want to release your music anyway, using such an automatic online mastering service may be helpful, at least in the beginning (it’s not free, though).
I personally don’t believe that such mastering services are any good. Also i think they’re often a bit shady, just giving out a “louder” playback in the preview player, what makes people usually think that it sounds better. And that may not objectively be the case.
There’s really some weird shit going on when it comes to mastering music. I prefer to master my music myself and release it only when i have the levels right and personally think that the sound is kicking.
I also believe that you don’t need special equipment for mastering, but i talk about that in another video. Check it out: Mastering in the DAW
