In the virtual modular synth Cardinal with its 1000+ Free Modules, it’s very easy to go all in and create enormous patches that would be almost impossible to build in the “real” Eurorack World, where your wallet sets the limit very quickly.
Not to mention the hidden beauty that often can be found in minimal sounds.
So i’ve made a video on how to make a simple modular ambient drone with only 3 Modules – all virtual versions of famous hardware modules by Mutable Instruments.
“Marbles”, “Braids” and “Clouds” would cost around 1.000,- in the Eurorack-World, so it’s really very kind of Mutable Instruments (aka Audible Instruments) to make these clones available in Cardinal.
It could also be a nice experiment to recreate this ambient patch with other modules. You basically need a random generator, an oscillator, filters and effects.
How it works
The main sounds comes from the 3 powerful modules mentioned above, but of course i send the output through a Stereo Delay and Valhalla Supermassive (in the channel inserts of the DAW).
To add some unpleasant noises i fire a second OSC with an LFO and also connect two more LFOs to the Level CV and Pan CV in the Mixer. This adds more movement to everything.
